Hotels, Cottages and Inns in the Lake District

Lake District Inns and cottages was started as a company in 1990 by Derek and Lynne Sweeney
Lake District Inns

After some fifteen years in hotel management with positions in Switzerland, France, Barbados, Florida, New York and London with an international hotel company they decided to start their own business in the Lake District by purchasing the renowned 16th century inn at Grasmere - The Traveller's Rest.

Derek and Lynne were joined by Derek's brother Graham and over the years the acquisition of The King's Head Hotel at Thirlspot, the acquisition of the Keswick property that was to be developed into Sweeney's Bar, Restaurant and Rooms, holiday homes in Grasmere, Ambleside and Keswick and the extension and development of the Traveller's Rest have seen the company develop into a diverse tourism business employing upwards of fifty people.

Recent developments include the creation of the Lakeland Store at The Kings Head Hotel and the purchase of the Old Youth Hostel at Legburthwaite near Keswick which is scheduled for re-development in the near future.

Company Managing Director Derek Sweeney says 'over the last seventeen years we have seen many changes in tourism in the Lake District. Our businesses are all located in the heart of The National Park and are a very good barometer for measuring the ebb and flow of business over the years. The Lake District continues to be a superb holiday destination both for our domestic visitors and international guests alike. Even with the lure of cheap flights to most European and now international destinations we continue to be extremely busy with both our loyal regular clientele and new visitors.

We are continuously developing our properties and investing in all aspects of the business including our staff development. We strive for the highest possible standards and want all our guests and visitors to experience the relaxed yet informal style of service that we pride ourselves on while they explore, experience and enjoy the beauty of the Lake District.
